Coin vs. Token: The Real Difference, and Why THEO Is Both

A coin is the native asset of its own blockchain, mined or staked into existence by the validators who secure that chain. A token is a digital asset that lives on top of someone else's blockchain, usually created through a smart contract standard rather than a protocol of its own. THEO is technically both at once: Autheo's native Layer 1 coin, plus a separate bridged version that trades as an ERC-20 token on Base. That dual reality is why we're tightening up the language across autheo.com, replacing loose token references with the more precise word wherever THEO's own mainnet asset is being described.

What Actually Separates a Coin From a Token

The distinction comes down to where an asset lives, not how popular or valuable it is. According to Kraken's research team, a crypto coin is the native asset of a blockchain protocol, serving as the medium of exchange for transactions executed directly on that chain's base layer. Bitcoin and Ether are coins because each one is inseparable from its own network. There is no Bitcoin without the Bitcoin blockchain, and no Ether without Ethereum.

A token works differently. It is a digital asset deployed on top of an existing Layer 1 blockchain, most often through a smart contract standard. Ethereum's ERC-20 standard, proposed by developer Fabian Vogelsteller in November 2015, is the most common example. It defines nine required functions a contract must implement so wallets, exchanges, and apps can all interact with the asset the same way, according to Ethereum's own developer documentation. Chainlink, Uniswap, and Tether all run as ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum. None of them has its own blockchain, and all three depend entirely on Ethereum staying online.

There's a simple test here. If launching an asset required building and securing an entirely new blockchain, it's a coin. If the asset was minted through a smart contract on a chain that already existed, it's a token, no matter what a project's marketing calls it. Why the Difference Isn't Just Semantics

Regulators draw the same line, and it isn't a minor technicality to them either. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Digital Assets Primer defines virtual currencies, sometimes called coins, native tokens, or intrinsic tokens, as assets whose intended purpose is to serve as a medium of exchange on their own network. A digital token, by contrast, requires another blockchain network to operate and may serve functions beyond acting as currency.

Labels alone don't settle the question, though. As William Hinman, then Director of the SEC's Division of Corporation Finance, put it in a June 2018 speech, simply labeling a digital asset a utility token does not turn the asset into something that is not a security. The same logic applies to the coin-versus-token label itself. What an asset technically is depends on its underlying architecture, not on what a team decides to call it in a pitch deck.

This distinction keeps shaping active regulation. In March 2026, the SEC and CFTC jointly issued a five-part token taxonomy clarifying which categories of crypto assets count as securities, according to Bloomberg, splitting digital commodities, digital collectibles, digital tools, payment stablecoins, and digital securities into separate treatment. Whether an asset is a native coin or a bridged token can affect which bucket it lands in and what disclosure rules apply.

There's also a practical supply difference. Coins typically enter circulation gradually, through mining or staking rewards tied to ongoing network security. Tokens are usually minted all at once at genesis, with the full supply created up front and then distributed through sales, airdrops, or similar one-time mechanisms, per Kraken's breakdown of the two models. THEO's Dual Nature: A Native Coin on Autheo L1, and a Bridged Token on Base

Autheo runs on Proof of Autheo, a hybrid consensus model combining licensed validator eligibility with stake-weighted block production. To participate as a validator, operators must hold an Autheo NFT License and meet the required staking or bonding threshold. Once both requirements are met, the active validator set operates using a standard Proof-of-Stake model, where validators earn rewards and produce blocks in proportion to their stake. The underlying framework is built on Cosmos SDK and Tendermint core BFT, providing Byzantine fault-tolerant finality and proven production-grade security.

THEO's primary form is a native coin. It is earned directly by the validators who secure Autheo's Layer 1, the same way BTC and ETH are earned on their own networks. It's a distributed cloud platform that uses a blockchain as its trust layer, and THEO is the coin that underwrites that trust layer directly.

THEO also exists in a second form: as a bridged token. A bridged version trades as an ERC-20 token on Base, listed through the Hydrex decentralized exchange alongside launch partners including TrustSwap, Team Finance, Utila, and ApeBond.

This week, that bridged footprint just expanded: THEO also went live via Uniswap on Robinhood Chain, opening a second, more mainstream path to bridged THEO liquidity. More on that below.

Both forms are real, and both matter, but they aren't the same asset technically. The Autheo-native THEO is a coin because it's inseparable from Autheo's own consensus. The Base-bridged THEO is a token because it depends on Base's smart contract infrastructure to exist. Neither description is wrong. They describe two different layers of the same economic asset.

THEO Just Expanded to Robinhood Chain via Uniswap

THEO's bridged token just got a second home. Alongside the existing Base listing through Hydrex, a bridged representation of THEO is now also live and trading via Uniswap on Robinhood Chain, giving traders their first direct path to THEO liquidity on Robinhood's own chain.

This is a bigger on-ramp than it might sound. Robinhood Chain plugs THEO into one of the most mainstream, retail-friendly corners of crypto, reaching traders who may never have touched a DEX on Base before. None of this changes anything about the native THEO coin securing Autheo's own Layer 1, it simply gives the bridged token a second, higher-reach venue to trade on.

Why We're Updating Our Terminology

For most of Autheo's public-facing content, token has been used as a catchall word for THEO. That's accurate for the Base-bridged version but imprecise for the coin that actually secures Autheo's mainnet. We're correcting that going forward. New content, our glossary, and our FAQ pages will describe Autheo-native THEO as a coin, reserving token for the specific bridged ERC-20 asset on Base.

This is a language change, not a change to how THEO works. Nothing about staking, transaction fees, the emission schedule, or THEO's utility model changes because of this update. Staking and transaction fees remain live today on Autheo mainnet, with compute, storage, and AI inference rolling out over the coming months as those layers reach mainnet.

We're keeping existing page addresses exactly as they are, including the pages that still use the word token in their URL, since those addresses are already indexed and shouldn't move. What changes is the visible copy on those pages and across the glossary, explaining THEO's dual nature clearly instead of defaulting to token everywhere. Earlier posts describing the Hydrex launch stay published as originally written, since we're not rewriting the archive. This update applies to new content and to a handful of evergreen reference pages, like the glossary, FAQ, and staking pages, going forward.

A terminology update can sound bigger than it actually is, so here is exactly what stays the same. THEO's total supply, its seven-year linear emission schedule, the 399 structurally scarce validator positions, and the dual-gate requirement (NFT License plus staking or bonding threshold) are all unchanged. So is THEO's utility itself: staking and transaction fees are live today, and compute, storage, and AI inference remain on the roadmap, rolling out over the coming months as those layers reach mainnet. Only the descriptive word attached to the native Layer 1 asset is changing, from token to coin.

What the Coin vs. Token Distinction Means for You

For developers building on Autheo, this distinction is directly relevant to your own smart contract work. Any asset you issue through a contract on Autheo, whether an in-game item, a stablecoin, or a utility asset for your own app, is a token by definition. It's deployed on top of Autheo's coin-secured base layer rather than replacing it.
